Open Source Technologies
- Has your boss given you the task of running a new Linux server?
- Do you have some existing Perl scripts you need to maintain?
- Is your company thinking about using the Apache Web server?
- Are you looking for a low-cost alternative to expensive SQL databases?
SQLSoft+ provides a wide range of courses to help you get up to speed with
open source software.
Open-source software has been described as a disruptive
technology... something that is so different from what's come before that everything
else suddenly changes. You'll find organizations large and small adopting open-source
technologies these days... perhaps you are one of them, or would like to be.
SQLSoft+ can give you the tools to embrace open-source, without getting "disrupted"
yourself. Even if you don't know what open source is, or aren't
quite sure how to pronounce Linux*, you probably use open source systems on
a daily basis without knowing it.
The term "open source software" means that the actual code that was
used to create the software is freely available. The authors normally retain the
copyright to open source software they produce, and the software itself is
released with one of many available licenses. Some of these licenses include the
GNU General Public License (GPL), the Perl Artistic License, the BSD license,
the Mozilla Public License, and many others.
SQLSoft+ Knows Open Source
As always, our customers drive everything that we do at SQLSoft+. You asked
for open source software training and consulting, and you've got it!
Linux
Are you migrating to Linux from another operating system? Have you suddenly
had Linux foisted upon you by your boss? Want to know what all the fuss is
about? Whatever your situation, we can get you up-to-speed quickly.
Introductory-level
The starting point into Linux is L-100, Introduction
to the Linux Operating System. It covers the basics of using the Linux
bash command shell, editors, and other useful tools. The three-day course also
covers basic shell scripting.
Administration
Our two five-day administration courses give administrators the skills to keep
servers and networks humming.
Or, if you're already an experienced UNIX sysadmin, you can take the equivalent
to the above two courses in an accelerated format in L-615,
Linux for UNIX Administrators.
Security
Is security your focus? We have not one, but two security courses in the lineup.
Troubleshooting
Finally, for those of you who just can't seem to get enough lab time, L-314,
Linux Troubleshooting is 25% lecture, 75% lab. The course materials
cover 120 common Linux failure scenarios using a unique utility that breaks
the system in a predictable way, then offers optional hints as you research,
diagnose, and finally repair the problem.
Curriculum
Guru Labs is well-known and respected within the Linux training industry and
has partnerships with many Linux training organizations. They aggressively update
their courseware to include the latest technologies, and support multiple distributions.
All of these courses are taught on Red Hat Linux, the most popular Linux distribution.
In addition to preparing you for the real world of Linux server administration,
these courses also cover most of the topics needed to become certified by the
Linux Professional Institute. (Because our courseware covers the very latest
Red Hat versions and cutting edge technologies, some obsolete topics on the
exams have been omitted from the classroom.) You can even take the exams here
at SQLSoft+ in Bellevue, because we are an official VUE testing center. You
can take your Linux training and your certification testing all in one convenient
location.
Perl
The open-source Perl programming language has become an indispensable tool
for webmasters, system administrators, developers and analysts worldwide.
SQLSoft+ instructors have taught many Perl courses, including customized courses
that delve into advanced topics.
You can take advantage of Perl yourself by attending SQLSoft+'s five-day
course A-160: Introduction to Perl course. You'll learn
all about variables, arrays, hashes, and other Perl data structures. Hands-on
exercises let you learn all about file I/O, regular expressions, and working
with simple databases. Before you know it, you'll be fluent in Perl and hungry
to learn more.
The course is taught using RedHat Linux workstations, so a working knowledge
of Linux would help but is definitely not required. And if you want more
advanced courses, ask for a custom class. We'll be happy to design and deliver
the course you need.

Linux kernel, pronounces "Linux" with a soft "i" sound,
e.g. "linnucks." Linus has recently joined Open Source Development
Laboratories (OSDL) to work full-time on Linux. OSDL, along with IBM's Linux
Competency Center, are just a couple of miles away from the SQLSoft training
center in Beaverton, OR.
