So grab yourself a cup of coffee and take a second to read about a problem Instructor Director Christopher Chapman had when he tried to create a SharePoint MySite in MOSS 2007. What did he do to solve it? Read all about it below. SQLSoft+ instructor Mark Wheatley asks "Windows 7 - Upgrade or In-place?", which may not make Microsoft happy but it may solve a thorny problem you might be having.

We have some new classes coming on our schedule including ones on Virtualization and Citrix and a variety of featured classes which you might find interesting--everything from Windows 7 and Cisco to ITIL and Forefront Identity Management. If you have taken MIIS, you need to know about this and (btw these classes are a SQLSoft+ exclusive.) Plus we have a full schedule of First Looks and Webinars scheduled over the next quarter.

So let us know what you think about this new newsletter format. What do you want more of? What should we drop? You are the boss...let us know what YOU want.

Self-Service Site Creation in SharePoint 2007

Problem - When attempting to create a MySite in MOSS 2007 I get the following error: "Your personal site cannot be created because Self-Service Site Creation is not enabled. Contact your site administrator for more information."

This will happen when you have selected the ‘Advanced’ install method, and you are using service accounts as recommended by Microsoft. When an 'Advanced' install is done, no web applications or site collections are created by default. Thus when you create those web applications, you will need to specify the service accounts to be used. If you select ‘Basic’ you won’t see this problem. When a 'Basic' install is done, the Network Service account is used as the service account for the web application(s) created by default.

This is a double-whammy how-to as it will both solve a problem and provide how-to information on a configuration.

  1. Open Central Administration on a computer designated for Sharepoint Administration.
  2. Click on Operations.
  3. Under Security Configuration, select Update Farm Administrators Group.
  4. Click New.
  5. Select Add Users.
  6. Either type in the service account name for the Web Application hosting your MySites site collection, or click on the phone book to search for a name.
  7. Leave “Add users to a SharePoint Group” selected. This box should say Farm Administrators [Full Control].
  8. De-select “Send welcome e-mail to the new users”. This is a service account and probably doesn’t have a mailbox to begin with.

The reason I have selected this relatively simple how-to is that it solves a well-known issue with SharePoint, which I have outlined below:

When configuring the advanced install, if I use my own service accounts and not the alias accounts already present in Windows (i.e., Network Service) this problem is created, and my users are unable to create mysites. So use the alias accounts in Windows!

Note: Yeah I know enabling Self-Service Site Creation is another way to solve this problem, but once the problem is created it's sometimes hard to figure out a way to back out of it.

Windows 7 - Upgrade or In-place?

It’s the classic problem - do an in-place operating system upgrade with the usual degradation of the files on the hard drive or do a clean install? But when I looked closer, I saw that the release candidate of Windows 7 prevented me from doing an in-place upgrade. So what did I do? If I could do an in-place upgrade of Windows Vista to Windows 7, devilishly changing the cversion.ini file on the DVD, I would not have to pass my remaining days with older operating systems, in which multitudes of mortals are currently drowning.

So, I  lowered the minimum upgrade version for the client contained within the text file cversion.ini in the SOURCES folder of the Windows 7 DVD, and began the install which only took one hour and twenty minutes on my laptop. The result? The Windows 7 logo shined down upon my keyboard! I decided to see if I could upgrade from Windows 98 to XP - XP to Vista, and Vista to Windows 7. All efforts met with success. This is the first time that upgrading to a new Microsoft operating system has been virtually painless! Praise be to Microsoft - this time they got it right. I'm in Seventh Heaven, Windows Seven heaven, and have escaped the clutches of the upgrade underworld for the first time in eternity.

Even though we are advised to do a "clean install" of Windows 7, there are far fewer risks with an in-place upgrade than ever before.  Next time you see a Microsoft Software Evangelist carrying around a collection plate, buy that MSFT stock!  And upgrade to Windows 7.
